Efforts to keep water in Bay

A warning to Provincial Politicians: beef up the language of legislation designed to prevent Great Lakes water from being siphoned out of the Great Lakes Basin.

Mary Muter of the Georgian Bay Association says under the proposed legislation, there is the potential for intra basin diversions without any specific requirements for return flow.

She says the Sustainable Water Resources agreement between Ontario, Quebec and the 8 U-S Great Lakes state does not adequately address diversions of water from Georgian Bay or Lake Huron.

Already she says the Region of Waterloo wants to tap into Georgian Bay water and that could result in even lower water levels unless that water is returned to the Georgian Bay water shed.

She says the heat is on to get Georgian Bay Lake Huron water and there needs to be some tightening of the language in the agreement to prevent this.

Muter says another concern is there are no scientific studies as to just how much water there is in ground or the Great Lakes and until they understand the science, movement of water from one lake to another should not be allowed.

It is expected the new Great Lakes Water agreement could be signed by the end of this year.
